Nukem Corporation (later EnergySolutions) was contacted in April 2007 about a novel approach to cleaning out a demineralizer vault containing sludges stored for some six years and poorly characterized. Located about 30 feet below the operating surface and containing a 10-foot-diameter demineralizer vessel, the project required an innovative cleanup solution. A separate article version of this work describes the electrocoagulation technique used to destabilize and flocculate the colloidal suspension so the solids separate from the slurry.
