Instrument design, chromatography, and ion exchange. The separation science that everything after is built on.

  1. 1976First journal paper in Analytical Chemistry: a rapid-scanning UV-visible spectrometer as a liquid-chromatography detector.
  2. 1977Ph.D. in nuclear chemistry, University of Cincinnati. Computer-controlled data acquisition for rapid-scanning chromatography.
  3. 1978 – 1982On-line monitoring of clinical isoenzymes and continuously referenced chemical analysis, published in Clinical Chemistry and patented (1981, 1982).
  4. 1978 – 1982Wastewater disinfection chemistry: effects of chlorine, ozone, and UV on organics in municipal effluents; UV irradiation study in Environment International.
  5. 1983Field instruments for PCBs: a portable PCB monitor and direct infrared determination of PCB in transformer oil.

  1. 2005Hanford scale-dryer verification tests supporting the Demonstration Bulk Vitrification process, with DMJM Technology (WM2005).
  2. 2006 – 2007First ion-specific media papers: media for recalcitrant outage radioisotopes (WM2006), and at ICEM2007 a downselect process for upset conditions and electrocoagulation for BWR colloidal iron.
  3. 2008Dresden demineralizer vault cleanup with Exelon: six years of poorly characterized sludge, 30 feet below the operating floor (WM2008).

Fukushima and the isotope-specific platform · Kurion

Characterized inorganic media, modular vitrification, and the seven-week Fukushima deployment.

  1. 2009With Northwestern University chemists Mercouri Kanatzidis and Manolis Manos: a new inorganic media class for selective cesium and strontium removal (WM2009, ICEM2009).
  2. 2010Extensive characterization of inorganic ISM for Co, Cs, Sr, Ni and Tc; pilot-scale Advanced Microwave and Modular Vitrification Systems.
  3. 2011Two vitrification-compatible ISM classes for the Hanford Waste Treatment Plant (WM2011 Paper 11001). After the 11 March accident, bench testing on contaminated seawater and a modular water-treatment system running at Fukushima Daiichi within seven weeks.
  4. 2012 – 2013Fukushima recovery papers: the seven-week deployment, isotope-specific remediation media and systems, and a two-year processing update.
  5. 2014Three peer-reviewed articles in the Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, including work with CRIEPI; a reactive transport model for media optimization (WM2014); Magnox pond trials in the UK, presented at the EPRI low-level waste conference.

  1. 2022Oak Ridge's independent zeolite evaluation names Fluid Tech's WTZ® 100 as a durable Cs-137 / Sr-90 medium (WM2022 Paper 22292).
  2. 2023Salem Nuclear Station: in a column test on outage water, FHA drives activated cobalt below the plant's discharge limit.
  3. 2024Hanford 105-K West Fuel Basin dewatering and decommissioning completed, with WTZ® 100/200 and FHA capturing Cs, Sr and TRU into shielded modules.
  4. 2026The Hanford 105-KW paper (WM2026 Paper 26259) with James Duncan, Greg Broda and Pete Sauer. Fifty years after the first one.

Fluid Tech's CTO led media technology at Kurion, Inc. through the Fukushima Daiichi response, the affiliation printed on these papers.
