Conference Paper

The scientist behind this work is Fluid Tech's Chief Technology Officer. Mark S. Denton authored this paper while at EnergySolutions, Inc. (the affiliation printed on the paper), before joining Fluid Tech. It is part of the published record behind Fluid Tech's ion-specific media and waste-stabilization approach. The summary below is for reference only; full details are in the cited paper. See Dr. Denton's full publication timeline →

01 Overview

SOGIN's EUREX facility in Italy was developed as a pilot-plant functional testing laboratory for spent-fuel reprocessing. Operated successfully from 1970 and later shut down with Italy's suspension of nuclear operations, the facility still held spent nuclear fuel requiring decommissioning. The work was addressed through a four-phase approach covering feasibility, pool cleanup, systems revamping, and pool draining and resealing.

Summary written from the published abstract. It reproduces no proprietary data, methods, or results.

02 Why it matters

  • Fuel pools are Fluid Tech's home turf: the same class of problem as the Hanford 105-KW basin, solved fifteen years earlier in Europe.
  • Phased, risk-managed approach: feasibility first, then cleanup, then draining. A template for basin decommissioning.
  • International track record: Dr. Denton's decommissioning experience spans DOE, commercial US plants, and European legacy sites.
